Discord will force you to update your username soon

Ana sayfa / News

In the coming weeks, Discord will require every user to pick a new username. After this change, users will have unique usernames as in Instagram or Twitter. Also, display names that can be the same as other users. Thus, four-digit tags that make it difficult to search or add friends will be a thing of the past.

Four-digit tags will no longer be required

“The whole point of these changes is that we want to make it a lot easier for you and all the new users coming to Discord to connect and hang out with friends,” co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy wrote in a blog post. The original aim with the four-digit tags was to allow you to choose any username you wanted, but it has now become “technical debt,” according to Discord.

The company said that the usernames are “too complicated or obscure” for people to remember. So, the new usernames are lowercase, alphanumeric, limited to certain special characters, and do not have discriminators, making them easier to remember, read, type, and share. The new usernames will be unique. The new username will look like this “@username”.

These changes will be rolling out over the coming months. Also, these changes start with access to owners of partner and verified servers. Then to all users based on the age of their account in the coming months, starting with 2015. So if you are old enough you get the chance to change first. Current Nitro subscribers paying for the ability to customize their discriminator that was registered on or before March 1, 2023, will also be given early access.
