Disney has recently made headlines by investing a whopping $1.5 billion in Epic Games. It is believed that this investment is crucial for the company’s future plans in the gaming and entertainment universe. However, senior executives of the company have stated that this investment is mutual, and we can expect to see many licensed Disney contents on the Epic Games platform.
Expanding the Disney universe
With the return of Disney’s successful CEO, Bob Iger, it was known that the company aimed to increase investments in its own brands to create a universe encompassing all gaming and entertainment. Disney, which uses Epic’s Unreal Engine in many of its digital contents, is expected to continue this trend and offer more comprehensive experiences.
CEO Bob Iger described this acquisition as the largest investment the company has made in the gaming sector. According to leaks, the company will enter into a massive collaboration with Epic Games’ Fortnite game series. As a result of this collaboration, it seems that we will see many Disney characters under the Fortnite umbrella.
However, although the $1.5 billion investment seems massive, it only constitutes a portion of Epic’s total value. The company’s total value was set at $32 billion in 2022, and it is safe to say that this figure has increased even further today. Another topic of discussion, especially in America, is that nearly half of the company’s shares belong to the Chinese Tencent. This is because it has long been alleged that the Chinese government wants to use entertainment tools like games for its own propaganda purposes.
