Disney is developing new features to encourage Disney Plus, Hulu and ESPN subscribers to spend more time with their content. According to the Wall Street Journal report, it aims to increase user engagement by following in Netflix’s footsteps. With these steps, it plans to reduce the likelihood of subscribers switching to competing platforms and increase advertising opportunities.

Disney’s plans include new channels dedicated to specific shows or franchises, such as The Simpsons or the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These ‘live’ channels are expected to stream a show or franchise from start to finish. More personalized algorithms to power content recommendations based on users’ viewing histories and customized promotional art for new shows and movies are also being developed.

For streaming services, churn is critical. Disney emphasizes the importance of retaining users for a long time and is strengthening its content recommendation systems based on Netflix-style user data. It is also stated that Disney is trying to increase customer loyalty through packages integrated with other services such as Hulu and Max.

Disney’s CEO Bob Iger has stated that personalization systems are one of the main ways to reduce marketing costs. The company announced that the new features could be available in the coming months.
