The traffic accident detection infrastructure, one of the most important features of the iPhone 14 series, continues to draw reactions. For those who missed it, every phone in the iPhone 14 lineup has a vital traffic crash detection feature. This system works well in real traffic accidents, but it also works in unwanted situations.
Call centers have started to report unnecessary crowding due to false alerts
Last month, it was reported that the traffic crash detection system on iPhone 14s even works on roller coasters. The system also detects people who fall while skiing as if they had been in a car crash. Therefore, it keeps health institutions busy in an unnecessary way when there is no major problem. This is becoming a serious problem in call centers as the number of iPhone 14s increases.
So Apple has taken a step, telling The New York Post that Apple has begun collecting feedback from call centers that have experienced a rise in automated emergency calls due to this feature. An Apple spokesperson declined to comment on the issue further. However, the company’s engineers seem to be preparing a major update to improve the process and reduce false calls.
What is Crash Detection System on iPhone 14 lineup?
Apple explains this feature: “All models come with groundbreaking security features that can provide emergency help when it’s needed most. With a new dual-core accelerometer that can detect G-force measurements up to 256 Gs and a new high dynamic range gyroscope, Traffic Accident Detection on iPhone 14s can now detect serious traffic accidents and automatically call an emergency call center when the user is unconscious or unable to reach their iPhone.
These features build on existing components, including a barometer that can now detect changes in cabin pressure, GPS that provides additional input for speed changes, and a microphone that can recognize loud noises typically heard in serious traffic accidents. Advanced Apple-designed motion algorithms, trained with more than one million hours of real driving and crash data, ensure even greater accuracy.”
