Apple’s recently launched iPhone 17 series has been met with user complaints, despite claims of durability. The blue iPhone 17 Pro and black iPhone Air models are reportedly experiencing scratch and wear issues.
Scratch Issues on iPhone 17 Pro and Air
While the devices have only recently hit shelves, user observations from various countries, particularly China, indicate that these models have a more delicate surface finish than expected.
When introducing the iPhone 17 series, Apple announced that its improved aluminum body would offer a more scratch and impact-resistant chassis. However, initial user experiences in China have proven otherwise. Display models displayed at Apple stores in Shanghai and Hong Kong were found to have visible scratches even after just a few hours of contact.
The same issue was reportedly observed on the iPhone Air. The scratches on this model are reportedly concentrated primarily on the device’s Ceramic Shield glass panel. These observations suggest a problem with the paint or surface coating technology used.
The problem appears to be more than just China. Editor Mark Gurman revealed that he found similar scratch marks on display devices he examined at Apple stores in London. France-based technology blog Consomac documented similar issues during its own Apple Store visit and shared them with the public. The images show signs of wear, particularly concentrated on the corners and edges of the devices.
These initial reactions from users suggest Apple may be reconsidering its color options and surface finishes. This year’s limited availability of black, or its exclusion from some models, may also be related to such manufacturing concerns.
Apple has not yet issued an official statement on the issue. However, if the problem becomes widespread, it could negatively impact the brand’s long-held reputation for premium materials.
