According to the latest news, if you still have time, you might want to avoid the latest Xbox controller firmware update. Version 5.23.5.0 has sparked complaints that it causes unexpected analog stick movement. An Xbox support representative explained that the problem is caused by a new virtual dead zone feature. So what do you need to do?
Xbox controller update is problematic: Software bug exists
As you may know, when random movements occur with an Xbox controller, gamers often attribute it to stick drift. We know that these sticks have mechanisms that wear out over time, but controllers that use Hall effect technology don’t have this problem. This time, however, a recent firmware update was the source of the problem. For several weeks now, many Xbox controllers have been exhibiting unwanted input.

Most of the complaints on Reddit are about both analog sticks making random directional movements. Gamers have noticed strange behavior when aiming or navigating menus in shooters. In other cases, Xbox controllers randomly disconnect or buttons don’t work properly.
So far, most of Microsoft’s responses have been unhelpful, but one representative has shared some valuable information. The representative confirmed that the unwanted input started after the Xbox controller firmware update 5.23.5.0. As part of the update in early February, the virtual dead zone feature was supposed to kick in just before the stick returned to its center position. Unfortunately, this feature is not working correctly and is causing erratic behavior on the Xbox controller.
For now, most Xbox players (console and PC users) have no choice but to wait for a fix. Changing existing dead zone settings does not affect the new virtual improvements. It’s also unknown why the firmware update is causing disconnections and strange reactions from the face buttons.
Meanwhile, one gamer shared a way to downgrade the firmware of his Xbox Elite Series 2 controller. However, this method does not apply to the standard Series X|S controllers. As gamers have noted, it’s unlikely that so many controllers will suddenly suffer from stick deflection. Not every controller is affected, but complaints are piling up.
