Dragon Quest HD-2D Remakes Won’t Offer Switch 2 Upgrade Option

Square Enix has confirmed that Dragon Quest HD-2D players hoping for a free or discounted upgrade on Switch 2 are out of luck. The company made it clear: if you want the upgraded version on Nintendo’s next-gen console, you’ll need to pay full price again. No cross-buy support, no partial upgrade fee, just buy it twice if you want both.

While the Switch 1 version will technically run on Switch 2 hardware, it won’t unlock any visual improvements. Instead, it’ll behave exactly as it does on the older device, with no boost in graphics, performance, or features. Square Enix confirmed that each version is built for its specific hardware, and they’re not compatible with each other.

Even the save data won’t carry over. If you begin your adventure on Switch and later upgrade your console, you’ll have to start fresh. Adding to the friction, the Switch 2 version ships on a cartridge that won’t work on the older system. So players are forced to choose their platform upfront, with no flexibility after.
