Until recently, eBay, which also existed in Turkey with GittiGidiyor formation but then withdrew, will pay millions of dollars in fines to the US Department of Justice. The reason is very meaningful.
eBay will pay 59 million dollars for selling addictive illegal substances
eBay reached a settlement with the US Department of Justice (DOJ) to pay $59 million and increase security measures related to the sale of pill-making machines that can be used to manufacture illegal addictive illegal substances.
The DOJ cited eBay’s responsibility to regulate the sale of equipment that criminals can use to manufacture illegal substances, including counterfeit pills containing dangerous elements such as fentanyl.
The Controlled Substances Act regulates the sale of illegal addictive drug manufacturing equipment, requiring verification of buyers’ identities, record keeping and reporting to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
The Justice Department alleged that eBay failed to comply with these legal requirements when selling thousands of pill presses and encapsulation machines through its platform.
Counterfeit pills, especially those filled with fentanyl, have been identified as significant contributors to the ongoing overdose epidemic. Illegally produced pills often closely resemble legal prescription drugs and pose a serious risk to public health.
The $59 million settlement represents one of the largest fines ever paid under the civil enforcement provisions of the Controlled Substances Act. Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, who leads the Justice Department’s Opioid Epidemic Civil Litigation Task Force, emphasized the link between counterfeit pills and fatal overdoses. Gupta emphasized the need for stringent measures to address the deadly consequences of these substances.
