The E5003, the third member of Turkey’s domestically produced electric locomotive series, successfully completed its first commercial journey. This new member of the E5000 series, developed by TÜRASAŞ, carried 617 tons of freight during a scheduled freight train service between Eskişehir Hasanbey and Sazılar. The 125-kilometer journey, involving 26 wagons, was completed without any technical problems.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu shared the development with the public, highlighting the progress made in Turkey’s railway industry. The Minister stated that the E5003 was delivered to the Turkish State Railways (TCDD) General Directorate of Transportation last month and underwent various safety and infrastructure tests during the process. All tests were reportedly successful.
The E5000 series is more than just a means of transportation; it is seen as a reflection of Turkey’s goal of reducing its dependence on foreign sources for railway technology. Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that with the production of these locomotives, Turkey is now among the few countries capable of designing and producing its own systems. He stated that domestic engineering and technical know-how is strengthening daily.
The E5000 series locomotives have an engine power of 5 megawatts and can reach speeds of 140 kilometers per hour. A total of 95 E5000 locomotives are planned to be delivered under the production agreement with the Turkish State Railways (TCDD). Within this scope, 15 locomotives will be produced by the end of 2025, 30 in 2026, and 45 in 2027.
The first commercial service demonstrates that the progress made on the project can yield significant results not only technically but also strategically and economically. Turkey’s foray into rail transportation with its own engineering solutions is considered a critical step for achieving sectoral independence in the long term.
