Bluesky and Nostr: The new social frontier
Bluesky is a platform backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and closely resembles Twitter, offering a similar format. Users can create profiles, post, repost, like, and reply to others’ posts, and search for other users. However, it currently operates on an invite-only basis. Bluesky is designed as an open-ended social media platform, aiming not to control or access user data and emphasizing user-driven moderation.
Nostr, or Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays, is an open protocol platform built to establish a global social network resistant to censorship. Both platforms aim to empower users by giving them control over their accounts.
Sweeney’s transition to Bluesky and Nostr
Sweeney’s move to Bluesky was sparked by a conversation with Dorsey, during which Dorsey encouraged Sweeney to continue his “@elonjet” updates on both Bluesky and Nostr. According to Business Insider, Sweeney joined Bluesky on April 30th, using the same handle he had on Twitter.
Sharing his thoughts on Bluesky, Sweeney stated, “It has that enticing feeling like Twitter.” However, upon attempting to use the “@elonjet” username, he found it was already taken. The owner of the handle agreed to transfer it to Sweeney, wishing for it to be in good hands. Sweeney has since joined Nostr, following Dorsey’s encouragement.
