Elon Musk may declare war on Nvidia

Ana sayfa / News

Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has taken action to reduce its dependence on Nvidia for accelerators used in data centers and transition to more efficient systems. Musk has prioritized energy efficiency, along with high performance, for xAI’s platform, Grok.

The server infrastructure used by xAI currently includes Nvidia’s GB200 and GB300 accelerators. However, Musk plans to deploy an AI accelerator ecosystem equivalent to the Nvidia H100 in performance but far superior in efficiency within the next five years. A total of 50 million accelerators are expected to be deployed.

Musk’s move is critical not only for hardware independence but also for reducing operational costs. Increasing efficiency reduces energy consumption, particularly in infrastructures running large-scale language models and AI services, paving the way for a more sustainable AI solution.

xAI has previously undertaken various initiatives regarding specialized AI accelerators. Initially, the goal is to design these hardware to rival older-generation Nvidia accelerators. In the coming years, the goal is to further raise the performance bar and develop systems that can directly compete in the upper segment of the market.

Musk’s statements are being interpreted as heralding a new era in the AI hardware market, focusing not only on performance but also on efficiency and energy management. This approach could directly impact both Nvidia’s position in the industry and the direction of global AI investments.
