Despite leaving his post during the second Trump administration, Elon Musk continues to increase his political influence and activism on the social media platform X. According to a detailed analysis by NBC News covering a month-long period from September 17th to October 17th, Musk’s posts on the platform are heavily focused on political issues rather than technology or business. Musk, the world’s richest person, posted, replied, or quoted a total of 1,716 times during this one-month period, equating to an average of 55 interactions per day.
Elon Musk’s X report card: Half of his posts are politically focused
According to the data analysis, politics was by far the most dominant topic on Musk’s agenda. The tech billionaire posted a full 844 posts about US and world politics, followed by his artificial intelligence company xAI with 366 posts. Musk’s other giant company, Tesla, was the subject of 196 posts, while SpaceX received only 95 posts. Looking at the overall picture, 49% of Musk’s posts are about political issues, while 41% are about companies he owns. This suggests that Musk remains interested in politics, despite his statements that he is leaving government to focus on business.
A closer look at Musk’s political content reveals highly controversial topics. Despite statistics showing a decline in crime rates, Musk posted 209 times about violent crime and kept this topic trending nearly every day of the analyzed month. Immigration was also one of Musk’s most frequently mentioned topics, with 133 posts. In these posts, Musk used harsh language, arguing that irregular immigration will lead to the collapse of countries. The analysis also reveals that Musk frequently posts about race, transgender individuals, and conspiracy theories, often engaging with content aligned with far-right views.
Experts interpret Musk’s intense activity on the X platform as an attempt to maintain his political influence during the 2026 midterm elections and beyond. Although he has stepped down from his official role in the White House, he continues to set the agenda with his following and influence. His frequent self-promotion in his posts and his dissemination of his personal views, like a media mogul, reflect his desire to remain not only a businessman but also a powerful political figure. The data clearly demonstrates that Musk spends more of his time engaged in ideological debates on social media than on Tesla or SpaceX.
So, what are your thoughts on Elon Musk’s rise to prominence for his political posts rather than his work in the tech world? Do you think a tech leader should be so politically charged?
