The Perseverance rover has captured a blue sunset image on Mars this time, and the recorded image was shared via Channel X. NASA provided an explanation for the image shared through the Mars Mission Images Bot account.
According to the explanation, the image in question was taken on Thursday, October 5th, with the navigation camera on the rover. The new image also highlights Mars’s unique characteristics. Mars has a different atmosphere compared to Earth, causing differences in the way light wavelengths and solar rays are refracted. This results in the formation of different colors.
Mars has a very thin atmosphere and is about 50% farther from the Sun than Earth. As a result, sunlight on Mars interacts with rich dust particles, whereas on Earth, it interacts with oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. This interaction with dust particles scatters low-frequency red light throughout the day, giving Mars its distinctive red color.
During sunrise and sunset, sunlight travels a greater distance through the atmosphere. This causes the scattering of light with short wavelengths, including blue and violet. Meanwhile, the images of sunrise and sunset captured by rovers on Mars also allow scientists to examine the composition of the Martian atmosphere.
