Apple announced that it has terminated Epic Games’ developer account. The decision comes in response to Epic Games’ criticism of Apple’s decisions and efforts to increase competition in digital markets. Epic Games interpreted Apple’s move as an intention to prevent real competition on iOS devices.
Epic Games heavily criticized Apple’s move
In a statement posted on the company blog, Epic Games says that Apple’s termination of its developer account removes a potential competitor to the App Store and shows other developers “what happens when you try to compete with Apple or criticize their unfair practices.”
Epic claims that Epic’s criticism of the DMA rules was one of the reasons Apple offered in support of its decision. Epic has already been in Apple’s crosshairs for some time due to its disputes with Apple. Epic’s actions suggest that Apple is threatening the integrity of the iOS platform and the security of users.
In a letter from Apple executive Phil Schiller, Epic’s criticisms and past actions strongly suggest that Epic does not intend to play by the rules. Schiller questions Epic’s credibility and emphasizes that future violations could threaten the integrity of the iOS platform.
Epic Games states that it has contractual relationships with Apple for the Unreal Engine and other creative tools dating back to 2010. This also highlights the fact that Apple provides public support for the Unreal Engine.
There is also talk that Fortnite may return to iPhones despite Apple banning the Epic Games developer account on the App Store. What do you think? Please don’t forget to share your thoughts with us in the comments section.
