Epic Games has announced that it will bring its popular free games campaign to mobile devices later this year. The program, which offers free games every week on PC, has played a big role in growing the Epic Games Store. Now it will be available on the mobile store.
Epic Games to expand its mobile store with free games
Speaking at the Unreal Fest event, Epic Games Store CEO Steve Allison revealed the roadmap for the mobile store. Allison said that in the fourth quarter of this year, Epic will begin offering third-party mobile games on its store for the first time. He estimates that between 10 and 50 games will be available in the first phase.
Allison also said that the Epic Games Store free games program will come to Android and iOS devices in the same timeframe. This move is aimed at attracting mobile gamers to the store, just like on PC.
The details of the mobile free game campaign are not yet clear. However, it is likely to follow a weekly format, similar to Epic’s desktop version. For those who don’t know, the digital store gives away a new free game every Thursday. Once you add the game to your library, it’s yours for a week.
Epic continues to fight Apple and Google in court over restrictions on third-party stores on mobile devices. The paid and free game program could offer developers a new alternative.
This step, which will help Epic grow faster on smartphones and tablets, is expected to be available early next year.
