Europol opposes end-to-end encryption on WhatsApp
On April 18, police chiefs from all EU member states and associated Schengen countries met. Following this meeting, which was attended by Europol’s executive director Catherine De Bolle, Europol reported that police chiefs urged governments and industry to take action against privacy protection measures like end-to-end encryption.
Catherine De Bolle commented on the current crime situation, stating, “Our homes are becoming more dangerous than our streets because crime is shifting online.” While end-to-end encryption on WhatsApp is widely used to protect user privacy, it can complicate police investigations.
Europol claims that WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption creates obstacles for police and hinders the process of collecting digital evidence. End-to-end encryption makes it more difficult to investigate crimes such as child abuse, human trafficking, drug smuggling, and terrorist attacks.
