According to a striking report published by Reuters, Meta generates billions of dollars in revenue annually from Facebook scam ads on its platforms. The allegations allege that the company knowingly turns a blind eye to this.

According to the report, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, knowingly ran fraudulent and illegitimate product ads. This led to the company generating a staggering $16 billion in revenue from such ads in 2024.

Internal documents: Profit over security
Internal documents obtained by Reuters reveal the seriousness of the situation. The documents show Meta’s hesitation to remove scam accounts. The company appears to prioritize ad revenue over user security, pushing billions of risky ads to users daily.

Responding to these serious accusations, a Meta spokesperson claimed that the revenue generated from these ads was “much lower.” However, the spokesperson declined to disclose the actual amount.

A Meta spokesperson stated, “We are resolutely combating fraud and scams on our platforms.” They also noted that they have reduced user complaints about fake ads globally by 58 percent in the last 18 months and removed more than 134 million pieces of fake advertising content by 2025.
