An unexpected event at the Paris Olympics has stirred the sports world: The Canada Women’s National Football Team is accused of using a spy drone to surveil rival teams they are set to face in the tournament. Here’s a look at the intriguing developments and reactions from the sports community…
Spy Drone Monitored New Zealand Football Team
The incident emerged ahead of a match between Canada and New Zealand scheduled for Thursday. New Zealand players noticed a drone flying over them during their training session in Saint-Étienne on Monday. Subsequent investigations revealed that a similar drone had been spotted three days earlier, on Friday.
Following the revelation of this espionage attempt, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) quickly issued an apology. The statement emphasized the committee’s commitment to fair play and expressed shock and disappointment over the incident. The COC extended their apologies to the New Zealand Football Federation, affected players, and the New Zealand Olympic Committee.
As a result of the scandal, two members of the Canadian Olympic Team, including an assistant coach, were officially removed from the team and sent back to Canada.
Despite head coach Bev Priestman’s denial of any involvement, she offered to resign from her role for the New Zealand match, and her resignation was accepted by the federation.
Following these events, FIFA’s disciplinary committee has launched an official investigation. Nevertheless, the Canadian Women’s National Football Team will be allowed to continue participating in the Olympics.
