Fitbit admits Google accounts will be required for wearables

Google acquired Fitbit in January 2021, but the brand kept releasing new wearables like before. The tech giant rebranded the wearables to “Fitbit by Google.” While you can already use the wearables with a Fitbit account, you will need a Google account to use the new wearables. Here are the details about Fitbit by Google.

Fitbit with a Google account in 2023

While there are not several changes in the devices, 2023 is expected to be a significant year for users. Now, you can use the devices with just a Fitbit account to keep your data in your account. However, the upcoming devices will require a Google account to use them. The new feature will probably allow you to use Google services.

With the new requirement, using a Google account on your device will give you access to Google services like Gmail, Drive, Maps, YouTube, and more. The brand will require a Google account for the wearables sometime in 2023. Using a Google account on Fitbit will provide better account security, centralized privacy controls for user data, and more additional Google features.

The wearables brand explains, “Google accounts on the devices will support several benefits for Fitbit users, including a single login for Fitbit and other Google services, industry-leading account security, centralized privacy controls for the user data, and more features from Google on Fitbit.”

You can use the wearable brand’s products and services separately from Google with a Fitbit account to use the smartwatches, fitness trackers, and scale. You will be able to use your existing account until at least early 2025. “We’ll be transparent with our customers about the timeline for ending Fitbit accounts through notices within the Fitbit app, by email, and in help articles,” the company announced. When you have the option to use a Google account, the device will give you an option to move Fitbit to your Google account.
