Garmin has rolled out Beta 17.01 for its older mid-range smartwatches, offering a few key bug fixes but leaving one major concern unresolved. While the update improves Garmin Messenger functionality and other minor issues, users across forums continue to report battery life problems that began with the v16.xx series.
Garmin Beta 17.01 brings Messenger and UI fixes
Garmin’s newest beta update is now available for devices like the Venu 3, Venu 3S, and Vivoactive 5, even as these models age out of it’s primary spotlight. Beta 17.01 includes:
- Updated Garmin Connect Mobile translations (v2.30)
- A fix for Garmin Messenger pairing issues
- A resolution for an EasyCard icon bug
These are welcome refinements, particularly for users frustrated by app sync problems but they don’t address the elephant in the room.
Garmin’s battery drain complaints remain unanswered
Despite ongoing user feedback, Garmin has yet to fix or even acknowledge battery drain issues tied to recent software updates. Since v16.05 rolled out in September, followed by v16.07, users of the Venu 3 and Vivoactive 5 have noted significantly reduced battery life, even with background functions limited.
The new beta update keeps the issue in limbo. Garmin hasn’t provided a timeline for a stable v17.xx release, though its current update pace suggests one may be coming soon.
How to get the update now
To install Beta 17.01 on a supported device:
- Go to the Main Menu
- Tap Settings > System > Software Update
- Select Check for Updates
This version is part of it’s Beta Program, meaning it won’t automatically roll out to all users yet.
A step forward, but not the fix users want
While Garmin Messenger now works as intended and UI bugs have been ironed out, the persistent battery life issues are keeping many users wary of updating again. It’s next move may determine whether loyal smartwatch owners feel heard or left behind.
