Google’s AI-powered Writing Tools for Gboard have quietly begun landing on non-Pixel devices, and no, it’s not just a test. Initially launched with the Pixel 10, the feature brings Gemini Nano–powered proofreading and rephrasing right into the keyboard. And now it’s showing up on select OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Samsung phones.
Writing Tools use Gemini Nano without the cloud
The highlight? Everything runs on your phone. Gboard’s Writing Tools use Gemini Nano, Google’s smallest AI model, which works entirely on-device. That means no internet connection is needed, and no text is uploaded to the cloud. It’s privacy-friendly and quick.
Gemini Nano debuted in 2023 with the Pixel 8 Pro, but back then, it was text-only. Now, the upgraded version supports images and audio too, unlocking broader functionality for supported phones. The new model launched with the Pixel 9 and is starting to appear across top Android devices.
Gboard Writing Tools are showing up on these phones
Right now, the rollout seems limited but growing. Confirmed appearances include:
- OnePlus 13: Full functionality after a small download
- Pixel 9 and later: Official support, per Google
- Select Xiaomi & Samsung models: Expected soon, if not already rolling out
Some devices, like the Galaxy Z Fold 7, may still be waiting. Chances are, if your phone runs on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or Dimensity 9400 chipset, it’s on the list or close to it.
What Gboard’s AI tools can do
Once the feature is active, you’ll spot a “Writing Tools” button on Gboard’s toolbar. Tap it, and you’ll get two main functions:
- Proofread: Fix grammar, punctuation, and clarity
- Rephrase: Offer smarter, cleaner rewrites of your message
It works across apps, email, social, and notes wherever Gboard is active. And since it’s local, responses come fast.
