The new AI-powered coding tool announced by GitHub is starting a significant transformation in software development processes. This new system, integrated into GitHub Copilot, can detect and fix errors in developers’ codes, improve existing codes, and add new features to the software.
GitHub introduced its system that fixes code errors with AI
The new coding tool automatically performs tasks assigned by developers. When the system receives a task, it starts a virtual machine, clones the relevant GitHub repository, and starts analyzing the codebase.
After the necessary edits are made, it also creates a detailed session log explaining why it did all the operations. When the task is completed, it tags the developer and allows him to review the result.
The AI tool can make additional edits by taking into account the comments received after the developer review. At the same time, by inferring the context; it can perform operations not only in line with the technical changes but also the general intention and coding standards of the project.
The new system is currently offered to GitHub Copilot Enterprise and Copilot Pro Plus users. Users can access this AI tool via GitHub’s website, mobile app, or GitHub CLI (command line tool).
GitHub’s move will increase competition in the AI-powered software space. Google announced its own coding tool Jules in December 2024. OpenAI recently introduced its next-generation Codex coding assistant to users via the ChatGPT platform.
