Google has taken the AI-powered summarization feature in Gmail a step further. The company announced that it will now automatically summarize long and complex email threads for Google Workspace users. Previously only working upon user request, this feature now works without waiting for any command.
Gmail introduces a new AI feature
The new system detects long message threads or emails with multiple replies and presents their summaries right above the email headers. The summaries are updated with new replies. In other words, the AI keeps the overall picture constantly up to date by tracking every message added to an email thread.
This new feature in Gmail is currently only available for English-language emails. It is also only available on mobile apps. Google stated that it could take up to two weeks for this feature to reach all user accounts. No statement has been made about when it will come to the desktop version or free Gmail accounts.
If the AI-generated summary is not displayed to the user, the option to manually request a summary will still be available. Users can turn this feature off completely if they wish. Those who disable the “Smart features” setting in the Gmail app will be removed from all smart functions, including AI-based summarization.
This update to Gmail is seen as part of Google’s strategy to integrate Gemini AI technology more deeply into the Workspace ecosystem. What do you think about this? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
