Today, the world is talking about the legendary Go player Lee Sedol, who was utterly humiliated by artificial intelligence in one of the oldest games known to man, Go. After playing a match against Google’s AlphaGo, an AI model specially developed by DeepMind, and showing no presence in the game, Lee Sedol retired shortly after.
AI Becomes the Nightmare of Go Players
Lee Sedol, an 18-time world champion known for his intuitive and creative playing style, quickly retired following this heavy defeat. In an interview with the New York Times, the former world champion admitted that he has been following every new development since losing to AI.
Lee claimed that people used to admire creativity, unique styles, and innovation, but these passions have almost become a thing of the past since the arrival of artificial intelligence.
Here are the statements from the former world champion:
“I am so shocked that I never thought I would lose. I never imagined that AlphaGo could play Go so perfectly. Losing to artificial intelligence shattered my entire world. While I may be suffering from AI for now, everyone will soon face this end, and I don’t think we will see a happy ending. Professional players are trying to bridge the gap by studying AI algorithms, but they are very far from succeeding. I knew I couldn’t enjoy the game anymore, so I decided to retire.”
According to Lee, AI can replace some jobs but can also create new ones. He emphasizes the importance of remembering that it was humans who created the game and designed the AI system that mastered it while thinking about AI dominance in Go.
