Google is preparing to phase out Google Assistant, which it introduced in 2016. The company announced that more users will use Gemini as the default assistant in the coming months and that the classic Google Assistant will no longer be supported. This innovation was met with great positive reactions by users.
Google Assistant app will be officially removed
Google plans to spread its AI-powered Gemini assistant to a wider ecosystem outside of smartphones. According to the company’s statements, devices such as headphones, smartwatches and cars will also receive Gemini support. It is also aimed to make Gemini available on platforms such as smart speakers, televisions and media players.
Google announced that devices that do not meet Gemini’s minimum system requirements will be able to use Google Assistant. These requirements are determined as Android 10 operating system and at least 2 GB RAM.
Google launched the Pixel 9 series with Gemini as default. The company is trying to make the user experience as seamless as possible by adding many important capabilities to Gemini during this transition process.
It is not yet clear when Google Assistant will be completely disabled, but it is estimated that devices released with Android 16 will come directly with Gemini. This move by Google was a strong indicator that the company is heading towards an AI-focused future.
