Google is discontinuing the continuous scrolling feature introduced in 2021 and 2022 on the search results page. From now on, we will see search results with the old-fashioned “Next” button instead of scrolling. So, why did Google feel the need to make this change?
The era of continuous scrolling on the Google search page is ending; the classic page is returning
Google first launched the continuous scrolling feature on mobile devices in October 2021, followed by desktops in December 2022. This feature allowed us to see several pages of search results without manually clicking the “More results” button.
However, based on user data, Google found that providing just 10 results is faster and that users find more results unnecessary. Therefore, Google is removing the continuous scrolling feature. Essentially, Google is saying, “There’s no need for verbosity; concise and precise results are sufficient.”
Starting today, when you perform a Google search on the desktop, you will see the classic Goooooooooogle pagination bar after about 10 results. This means that instead of continuous scrolling, you can continue browsing the pages by clicking the old-fashioned “Next” button. For mobile users, this change will be implemented in the coming months.
The main reason for Google discontinuing the continuous scrolling feature is to speed up the time you spend on searches and make it more efficient. According to Google, most users scan results up to four pages and believe that offering more results is not beneficial. Therefore, showing 10 results and then moving on to the “Next” button is considered a more logical solution.
