Google’s artificial intelligence research unit DeepMind is at the center of a new controversy. Engineers and researchers want Google to cancel its agreements with the military, citing ethical concerns about the use of AI in warfare.
Google DeepMind employees revolt over military contracts
A group of employees representing about 5 percent of DeepMind has demanded the withdrawal of agreements between Google and the military. The 200 DeepMind employees are demanding that the company reconsider its contracts with military organizations.
The researchers expressed concern that artificial intelligence technology developed by Google could be used for surveillance and targeting in conflict zones. Accordingly, the complaint sent to executives drew attention to the “Project Nimbus” agreement between Google and the Israeli army.
Project Nimbus, a cloud computing deal, uses artificial intelligence tools to help the Israeli government spy on Palestinians and select bombing targets in Gaza. DeepMind researchers believe that such use is unethical and undermines AI leadership.
It is also contrary to the principles of Google and DeepMind. The employees also made some calls to Google management. Accordingly, they called for an explanation as to whether military units had access to the company’s cloud computing systems.
According to reports, Google has not yet given a definitive response to these requests from employees. However, it is rumored that it will contact its employees to address concerns about its relationship with the military.
