The software giant announced that it has combined its two subsidiaries, Google Brain and DeepMind, under one umbrella. Google revealed that its AI research division has undergone a significant restructuring.

Google Brain and DeepMind Merge: Introducing Google DeepMind Google is undergoing a restructuring within its AI teams. This move will bring together two of the world’s leading research groups in one place, conducting AI research under a single unified plan.

The management team of the newly formed Google DeepMind will include former DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis and Google’s AI Team Manager Jeff Dean. Dean will report to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and will also be responsible for setting targets for AI research.

Over the past decade, both teams have developed notable AI projects such as AlphaGo, Transformers, and word2vec. They have also achieved groundbreaking success in the software world with platforms like TensorFlow and JAX.

Google’s restructuring of its AI division seems poised to intensify competition in this field, particularly amidst recent criticisms of the Bard chatbot. Even Google employees have called the bot embarrassing.

Another critique of the chatbot came from Alphabet Executive John Hennessy, who stated that Google was not ready to make AI publicly available. Despite these concerns, Google released the beta version of Bard in February.
