Google has introduced a significant update to its AI-powered chat app, Gemini. With this new feature, Gemini now automatically remembers users’ past conversations. Details provided by users, their preferences, and information from previous conversations are now directly taken into account by the AI. This system eliminates the manual reminder process that previously required the user to perform.
Gemini now remembers all conversations
With a feature introduced last year, users could introduce their personal interests and habits to Gemini. Now, this information is directly used without the need for each reminder.
For example, a conversation in which a user searches for YouTube content ideas related to Japanese culture in the past can form the basis for new suggestions in subsequent sessions. In the example provided by Google, Gemini can offer the same user suggestions based on the theme “Try Japanese food.”
The new system automatically recognizes and records the personal information, interests, and previous requests provided by the user, whether written or verbal. These records are directly used to personalize responses.
The automatic recall feature is turned on by default. However, users can disable this feature by going to the “Personal Context” section of the Gemini app settings. This allows Gemini to continue providing standard responses without collecting any personal information.
Google has also added temporary chat to Gemini. This feature allows users to ask personal or sensitive questions to the AI, but these conversations are not permanently saved.
These temporary chats are not used for any personalization purposes and are not included in the system as training data. They are only stored in the system for 72 hours, after which they are automatically deleted. Google has also announced that these chats will no longer be visible on the Gemini Apps Activity page, which will later be called “Save Activity.” This part of the system is considered by users to function as a “hidden mode.”
The update was first implemented in the Gemini 2.5 Pro model in select countries. Google announced that the same features will be rolled out to a wider user base with the Gemini 2.5 Flash model in the near future.
