As you may know, although Google brings innovation to the tech world, it is also known for launching new applications and then quickly pulling the plug on them. The world-renowned tech giant has officially discontinued the classic version of the beloved Meet app as of today. Here’s what you need to know…

Google officially discontinues the classic Meet app!

The removal of the old Meet app is seen as the final step in Google’s strategy to consolidate its video conferencing services under one platform. The new Meet app, which was merged with Duo, has gained over 5 billion downloads on the Play Store, showing huge user interest. However, until now, users could still access the old version of the app.

The main reason behind Google’s move is to enhance user experience and make its services more efficient.

The new Meet app comes with advanced features such as different emojis and the ability to directly call other Meet users. However, for those who preferred the simpler interface and didn’t want to use flashy features, today marks the final day for the old app.

Google has started sending notifications to users of the old Meet app, urging them to switch to the new version. When users open the app, they are greeted with a notification prompting them to download the new Meet app. Although the Play Store page for the old app is still accessible, it no longer functions.

The transition process is expected to go smoothly for users. The new Meet app not only includes all the core features of the old version but also boasts improved video quality, better audio performance, and a more user-friendly interface.

We had previously shared that Google plans to introduce AI-powered features to Meet in the near future. Let’s see what the future holds for the app.
