The new system instantly translates a speaker’s voice and delivers it audibly in the listener’s preferred language. Beyond just translating words, the AI preserves the speaker’s original tone, speaking style, and emotional emphasis—offering a much more natural and lifelike translation experience.
Google Meet, offers real-time translation
In the demo shown by Google, an English-speaking user and a Spanish-speaking user were able to converse naturally in a Meet call—each speaking in their own language, while the AI translated their speech in real time using their own voice characteristics and expressions.
This technology elevates AI translation capabilities from text to voice communication, marking a major leap in real-time multilingual interaction. It’s worth noting that Microsoft Teams also began testing a similar feature earlier this year.
Currently, the new translation system supports only English and Spanish. However, Google has announced that Italian, German, and Portuguese support will be added in the coming weeks.
The feature is initially being rolled out to individual subscribers and is expected to be made widely available for enterprise users by the end of the year. This update could significantly improve communication in multinational organizations by breaking down language barriers in meetings involving teams from different linguistic backgrounds.
