In honor of the 45th anniversary of the iconic game “SPACE INVADERS,” Google has teamed up with TAITO and Unit9, the game’s developers, to turn the world into a gaming arena using augmented reality (AR) technology. Introducing “SPACE INVADERS: World Defense,” a mobile game available on Android and iOS, that invites players from all corners of the globe to venture outside and defend the Earth.
How will Space Invaders: World Defense be like?
Taito, the company that originally released the original version of Space Invaders in 1978, and Google have now introduced a new version of the game that brings the invaders into the real world using augmented reality (AR) tricks through your mobile device. Google aims to make this new AR experience a hit. Just one day after Google I/O 2023, where the company announced various other exciting developments, they unveiled Space Invaders.
data from Google Maps and Google Street View. The game will appear to be played in the real world through a live video stream from a mobile device’s camera. The aliens will be able to fly behind structures and terrain, emerge from rooftops, and appear to come out from the sides of buildings.
Similar to Pokémon Go, players will explore their neighborhoods to discover new space invaders, earn points by defeating them, climb the ranks in localized leaderboards, and share their achievements on social media with the help of an AR selfie feature. Space Invaders: World Defense will be compatible with “ARCore supported devices” running Android 11.0+ or iOS 16.0+.
The game is currently available for download on the App Store and Google Play Store in some countries. However, it is not yet available in Turkey. If you recall, we faced a similar situation when Pokémon Go was initially released. Nevertheless, it is anticipated that the game will eventually become active for players in Turkey as well.
Now, I would like to hear your thoughts on this matter. Did you enjoy the game? Feel free to share your comments and opinions in the comments section.
