In collaboration with the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator (GESDA), Google has launched this competition under the name ‘XPRIZE Quantum Applications.’ Twenty finalists will share a $1 million prize and advance to the finals.
Finalists will present technical capabilities that prove quantum computers are faster or more accurate than traditional computer solutions. The top winners will receive $3 million, while the runners-up will share another $1 million prize.
Despite Google’s investment of millions in quantum computing, leading to an $866 million industry, what can be achieved with this technology is still not clear. While much of the research on quantum computers focuses on abstract problems, this technology has the potential to accelerate drug development, unravel the mysteries of dark matter, and help solve some of the universe’s fundamental enigmas.
Currently, understanding how they are more useful than a MacBook is challenging. Google’s competition might not mean we’ll have practical applications for quantum computers within three years, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction.
