The latest smartphone chart published by Statcounter points to interesting changes in the US market. Apple, which was at the top of sales with every new iPhone launch, lost share to the Google Pixel 9 series in the last months of 2024.
Google Pixel 9 managed to catch up with iPhone 16 customers
In the period following the launch of Pixel 9 in September, the increase in Pixel’s market share line is noticeable. In the same period, Apple’s market share has been visibly decreasing. This period includes the iPhone 16 models launched on September 20.
Contrary to expectations, instead of reviving iPhone sales, US consumers seem to have shown great interest in Google Pixel models. When we come to October, Pixel managed to take a share from Apple’s leadership with its third place position.
Samsung’s preservation of its second place position has directly exposed Pixel’s iPhone customers. Google seems to have managed to attract attention with the Pixel 9’s AI features and attractive pricing.
Alphabet’s latest earnings report also showed that demand for the Pixel 9 is high. Revenue in the “Google subscriptions, platforms, and devices” category, which includes Pixel sales, saw 29 percent annual growth.
While Google still ranks third overall in the US market, the data shows that the Pixel series is rapidly closing the gap with its biggest rivals. The planned innovations for the Pixel 10 and the company’s processor could further intensify this competition.
