Google is preparing to make a significant change to its popular web browser Chrome. According to new claims, the company will replace the built-in Chrome browser on ChromeOS with a new standalone browser called Lacros.

Google Chrome out, Lacros in on ChromeOS

ChromeOS, which has an important place in the world of affordable laptops, may surprise its users with a critical change. Reports showed that Google wants to make Lacros the default browser on Chromebooks instead of the Chrome browser.

This change could have significant implications for the future of both ChromeOS and Chrome. For example, currently, updating the Chrome browser requires ChromeOS to be updated as well. Lacros’ standalone structure will eliminate this requirement.

It's still possible to use the old Twitter logo. You can remove the X with an extension for Google Chrome.

In addition, older Chromebook models that do not receive system updates will be able to receive browser-specific updates through Lacros. This will increase the internet security of the devices.

According to early reports, Lacros is based on the Chromium project, which underpins Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Users can currently try Lacros with Chromebooks, but it only works with Chrome.

Code changes in ChromeOS suggest that Lacros may replace Chrome by default. This major change will be introduced with the ChromeOS 116 update, likely to be released in August-September.

Separating the browser from the operating system is something Google has been working on for years. If Lacros is released as planned, it could pave the way for faster updates for ChromeOS-based laptops.
