Google is preparing to launch a new feature for its popular translation service, Google Translate. Following features like AI-powered live translation and language practice, the app will now allow users to choose between two different translation models: “Quick” and “Advanced.” This new model selector is designed to be located at the top of the app, just below the “Google Translate” logo.
New option for Google Translate: “Quick” and “Advanced” translation modes are coming
When users tap this section, where the “Advanced” option is set by default, they will see a drop-down menu. Within this menu, there will be two options under the heading “Select text translation model.” “Advanced” mode promises high accuracy for particularly complex translations, while “Quick” mode, as its name suggests, is ideal for instant and rapid translations.
Google states that “Advanced” currently only supports text translations in certain languages. The design of this new feature is also notable for its resemblance to the model selector in Google’s artificial intelligence app, Gemini. As a reminder, Google recently moved this selector to the command prompt box in the Gemini app.
It’s not yet clear whether this new model selection feature will be free or part of a paid subscription. While the interface doesn’t suggest a fee, it’s likely to be included in the Google AI Pro package like other model selectors. The update is already appearing on some iOS devices but hasn’t yet been released for Android users.
Last August, Google announced major improvements in translation quality, multimodal translation, and text-to-speech capabilities with the integration of Gemini models into its Translate service. Furthermore, at the end of September, the iOS version of Google Translate also gained Control Center widgets for Camera, Text Translation, Dictation, and Speech modes, in addition to lock screen widgets.
Google Translate’s ability to choose between “Fast” and “Advanced” modes could provide users with a more flexible experience tailored to their needs. So, do you actively use Google Translate? Share your thoughts on this new model selection feature with us.
