GPD has officially revealed the price tags for its upcoming gaming handheld, the Win 5, with pre-orders opening this month in China.
GPD Win 5 will start at just above $1,200
One of the first handhelds powered by AMD’s Strix Halo chips, the GPD Win 5 is positioned as a performance-first device. The base configuration, which includes the Ryzen AI Max 385, will go up for pre-order at CNY 8,699, roughly $1,221.
For those wanting more power, the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 variant with 32 GB RAM is priced at CNY 9,999 (~$1,403), while the 64 GB model will run CNY 12,999 (~$1,824). GPD hasn’t confirmed the price of the 128 GB version yet.
No built-in keyboard this time
Unlike its predecessor, the Win 5 doesn’t include a keyboard. Instead, it’s focused entirely on performance, and it shows. The device features a 75 W TDP Strix Halo APU and a dual-fan cooling system to keep things running smoothly.
GPD Win 5 brings a new battery approach
GPD has opted for an external battery setup this time around, which stirred some mixed reactions from longtime fans. Still, the design does allow for a bit more versatility:
- The battery can be mounted directly to the back
- Or plugged in like a standard power bank
- Easier swapping during long sessions
- Potential for future battery upgrades
That flexibility could come in handy, especially for marathon gaming or travel.
Global launch could undercut Asus ROG Flow Z13
The Win 5 is scheduled for international release on October 17. And while global pricing hasn’t been finalized, GPD hinted it could start below $1,500 well below the $2,169 Asus ROG Flow Z13 with similar specs.
GPD Win 5 pre-orders begin September 25 in China
Chinese customers will get first dibs on September 25. Whether the rest of the world sees similar configurations or pricing remains to be seen.
GPD is betting big on horsepower this round. The only question now is whether performance can quiet the backlash.
