Microsoft has integrated OpenAI’s newest large language model, GPT-5, into all Copilot platforms. Launched last night, GPT-5 is available to Copilot users in “smart mode” and is available at no additional cost. The company has launched the GPT-5 integration on all platforms, including Microsoft 365 Copilot, Azure AI Foundry, and GitHub Copilot.

The new system allows the model to automatically adapt to the user’s needs. This “smart mode” feature allows Copilot to utilize different versions of GPT-5, sometimes providing faster responses and sometimes providing more in-depth answers to queries requiring more complex thought processes. GPT-5 is reported to offer significant improvements over its predecessor, particularly in context tracking, maintaining coherence in long conversations, and accurately analyzing user intent.
Copilot users can access this advanced AI system for free. Microsoft 365 users can also upgrade to GPT-5 starting today. On GitHub Copilot, GPT-5 has been activated on all paid plans. The advanced code completion and error detection features offered by the new model are expected to provide a significant performance boost for developers.
The GPT-5 family, developed by OpenAI, consists of four different versions. The main model is specifically optimized for reasoning and multi-step operations. The GPT-5-chat version is capable of understanding multimodal inputs, analyzing organizational contexts, and maintaining consistency during long-term conversations.
All of these versions are also available on the Azure AI Foundry platform. Developers can use the model routing feature on this platform to automatically activate the most appropriate GPT-5 version for the query.
With this integration, Microsoft demonstrates that GPT-5 is not just a model update, but a fundamental reshaping of the entire Copilot experience. Users receive faster, more accurate, and more contextual responses, while the system’s free availability is a notable advantage.
