Elon Musk’s AI company xAI has partnered with the El Salvadoran government to bring its chatbot, Grok, to over one million students across the country. According to an announcement by xAI on Thursday, the plan is to deploy the chatbot in more than 5,000 public schools over the next two years as part of an AI-powered educational program.

However, xAI’s Grok is better known for calling itself “MechaHitler” and spreading far-right conspiracy theories than for its use in public education. Over the past year, the chatbot has shared various antisemitic posts, made claims of “white genocide,” and even predicted Donald Trump’s victory in the 2020 election.
Now, El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele is entrusting the task of curriculum development to this controversial chatbot. Bukele is known for his interest in technology; He made his country the first to recognize Bitcoin as legal tender and was one of the first Central American presidents to use Twitter (now X) as a platform.
On the other hand, he is also known for ruling with an iron fist and cooperating with Trump on sending deported individuals to El Salvador’s infamous Cecot prison. In his statement about the xAI partnership, Bukele said, “El Salvador doesn’t just wait for the future to arrive; we build it,” adding that this partnership is “destined to offer something quite extraordinary for all of humanity.” Musk also praised his partnership with Bukele on Thursday.
