Rockstar Games’ planned story DLC for GTA 5 has been canceled due to the huge success of GTA Online. For those curious about the reasons behind this decision and what kind of content the canceled DLC will offer, details have emerged. Former Rockstar developer Joe Robino’s statements reveal the story of the canceled GTA 5 DLC.
The GTA 5 Story DLC featuring Trevor was moved there because GTA Online was a money printing machine
The planned story DLC for GTA 5 was one of the projects Rockstar Games was working on simultaneously with GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption 2. Former Rockstar developer Joe Robino revealed in an interview with YouTuber StanInPlay that the DLC project was paused halfway through to focus on GTA Online. The huge financial success of GTA Online made it difficult to work on new single-player content.
Robino said of the canceled GTA 5 DLC, “It was really, really good. But GTA Online was such a huge hit that it was hard to argue that a standalone DLC could compete with it. In hindsight, we probably could have done both, but it was a business decision they made. I’m a little uncomfortable with that.”
Robino said he was disappointed by the decision to cancel, adding: “At the time it made me a little bit angry. Because I thought, ‘This is so good, let’s keep going. Let’s finish this,'” he said.
Stating that the canceled GTA 5 DLC was not a complete waste, Robino said that a lot of the content developed for the DLC was included in GTA Online. This provides some solace for fans wondering about the potential of the DLC. However, fans are still left to imagine how this content will be used in the original story mode.
In one of the canceled GTA 5 DLCs, Trevor and I were supposed to do a few undercover missions for the IAA, the GTA version of the CIA. These missions are currently available on GTA Online.
