GTA 5 is still actively played by millions of players on many platforms, despite the passing of years. But the most interesting data is that the vast majority of players are still on an old console. This gives important clues about the future of the gaming industry and the console market.
The most played platform for GTA 5: PlayStation 4
According to Ampere’s analytics, the majority of GTA 5 players are still on the PlayStation 4 platform. This means that the majority of Rockstar’s daily revenues are still generated on the older generation of consoles. GTA 5 and GTA Online attract more than 20 million players each month across PlayStation, Xbox and Steam platforms. This number reached 25 million in June 2024, especially after the latest update “Bottom Dollar Bounties”.
Of course, there are also millions of players on Xbox One and Steam. However, the fact that PlayStation 4 holds the throne in this regard creates a critical situation for the future of PlayStation 5. Currently, data-based estimates suggest that half of PlayStation owners worldwide own a PlayStation 5. PlayStation 4 players, however, are very loyal to their consoles.
The current state of the gaming industry is more uncertain than it was five years ago. While the effects of the pandemic are still being felt, most gamers are still playing games from five or six years ago. The slower-than-expected transition to next-generation consoles suggests that the industry’s transformation will take time.
Analysts expect this transition to accelerate with the release of GTA 6. However, if this expectation does not materialize, greater challenges for the gaming industry and next-generation consoles could be on the horizon. What do you think?
