Nintendo’s Switch 2 has been a commercial hit since its launch, and it might soon be rewarded with one of gaming’s biggest titles. According to known leaker Nash Weedle, Rockstar is developing a GTA VI port for the hybrid console, but don’t expect it any time soon.
GTA VI Switch 2 port leak surfaces as console sells fast
The Switch 2’s early success has surprised even Nintendo. With over 10 million units reportedly sold by September and bundles like the Mario Kart World Pack flying off shelves, third-party studios are finally taking the system seriously.
CD Projekt Red kicked things off with a Switch 2 port of Cyberpunk 2077. Take-Two has followed with Civilization VI and an eventual Borderlands 4 release. Now Rockstar may be joining the party.
Weedle claims that a GTA VI port is in development for Switch 2, though it won’t launch alongside the PS5 and Xbox Series versions. The earliest possible arrival? 2027.
Switch 2’s momentum is attracting bigger titles
Nintendo’s previous consoles often missed out on modern blockbuster releases. But the Switch 2’s hardware bump, DLSS support, and fast install base are changing that.
Here’s what’s made the Switch 2 more appealing to studios:
- Over 10 million units sold in under 6 months
- DLSS-powered upscaling improves performance
- Higher developer confidence from early sales
- More triple-A games arriving post-launch
- Pricing remains competitive for a hybrid
With those advantages, it makes sense that Rockstar would consider a Switch 2 port even for a resource-heavy title like GTA VI.
GTA VI Switch 2 release may trail behind next-gen
While the mainline version of GTA VI is still targeting late 2025 or 2026, Weedle notes that the Switch 2 port is expected well after that. His wording suggests it may not even enter testing until 2027.
Worth noting: Weedle has been fairly accurate on Switch-related leaks before, including predictions around Elden Ring and DLSS. Still, nothing’s official, and Rockstar remains tight-lipped about any Nintendo involvement.
Switch 2 might finally get its Grand Theft Auto moment
For a platform once brushed off by triple-A devs, the idea of GTA VI running on Switch 2 feels like a turning point. Even if it lags behind other platforms, the fact that Rockstar is reportedly building a version at all says plenty.
Now it’s just a matter of how long Nintendo fans will have to wait before hitting Vice City on the go.
