The rapid advancement of technological devices has led to fraudsters resorting to different methods. The latest trick that has emerged involves the imitation of voices using artificial intelligence. According to this, hackers are using the voices of specific individuals to demand money from people.
Hackers using AI voice technology for money fraud
A report prepared by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reveals that scammers deceive people through fake phone calls. Scammers can copy the voices of a person’s family members by utilizing voice imitation technology.
According to FTC Chair Lina Khan, the rapid progress of artificial intelligence tools has the potential to increase fraud. Particularly with the development of artificial voice technology, it is becoming increasingly difficult for users to distinguish between real and fake communications.
According to the research, hackers gather voices from social media platforms and utilize artificial intelligence algorithms to generate desired sentences. They then train the artificial intelligence to imitate these voices accurately.
Fraudsters contact the family members or friends of the person whose voice they imitate, asking for money for emergency situations. For example, in the year 2020, when artificial intelligence was not as advanced, there were 5,100 cases of telephone fraud, resulting in a theft of $11 million.
Many countries, including the US and EU, have laws in place to combat fraud and scams. However, the detection of frauds carried out using artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly challenging with each passing day.
