Disney Plus is set to release a documentary about legendary game designer Hideo Kojima called “Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds”, a documentary about the legendary game designer. The release date has also been announced.
Hideo Kojima documentary will air on Disney Plus in early 2024
Scheduled to air on the Disney Plus streaming service in early 2024, the documentary offers a behind-the-scenes look at Kojima’s creative process during the development of Death Stranding and the recently revealed OD project.
Hideo Kojima is known for his contributions to the gaming industry, from the iconic Metal Gear series to the innovative Death Stranding and the enigmatic OD. “Connecting Worlds” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, positioning Kojima as an “auteur” (French for ‘creative writer’), a term explicitly used by Guillermo Del Toro in the documentary’s trailer.
While the documentary offers unprecedented access to Hideo Kojima’s game studio and insights into his creative mind, opinions on its value vary. Some critics argue that the documentary leans too heavily on fan service, with Kotaku describing it as “the worst kind of fan service” and suggesting that it obscures Kojima’s identity by inflating his mythology. Escapist agrees, calling the film a “one-hour commercial” for Kojima’s 2019 game Death Stranding.
While the documentary offers hints of Kojima’s personality (emphasizing his quirkiness, meticulousness, and passion for movies), it has been criticized for being a superficial exploration, providing limited insight into the factors that contribute to Kojima’s unique and successful work.
Hideo Kojima announced his strange new game OD at the Game Awards and watching how he developed this game and Death Stranding might not be interesting for everyone, but it’s worth a look. What do you think? Please don’t forget to share your thoughts with us in the comments.
