Honor has announced the establishment of a new sub-brand that will focus on chip design. The Chinese manufacturer, known for its smartphones, has officially introduced Shanghai Honor Intelligent Technology Development Co. This move is particularly notable following Oppo’s exit from the chip industry.
Honor introduces Shanghai Honor Intelligent Technology Development
Shanghai Honor Intelligent Technology Development Co will primarily work on chip design, sales, related services, and the development of artificial intelligence applications. The organization, which will work on key in-house chips, has a capital of 100 million yuan (14 million dollars).
The chip brand operating under Honor Terminal will serve as one of Honor’s five research centers in China. These research centers are expected to invest in core technology, software, graphics algorithms, communication, and photography.
Oppo recently decided to disband its chip design team, citing uncertainties in the global economy and the smartphone market. However, Honor’s investment in the chip industry as a rival company has increased speculation in this field.
We know that major Chinese brands are working on their own chip designs. For example, Xiaomi has pledged to invest millions of dollars in chip development.
Honor CEO Zhao Ming stated that their chip designs will be carried out in collaboration with chip suppliers like Qualcomm and MediaTek. Initially, the developed models are expected to be used in areas such as cameras and processors.
