Can you stop cats from scratching your furniture?

Ana sayfa / News

While cat scratching is a common problem for owners, this behavior is completely natural for cats. But excessive scratching is often perceived as a behavior problem. Veterinarians do not recommend taking extreme measures against such problematic cats. Fortunately, science-backed alternative strategies can help reduce or redirect scratching behavior.

A new study reveals that scratching behavior is influenced by a variety of factors. Stress, in particular, is one of the main reasons why cats scratch furniture.

According to veterinary researcher Yasemin Salgırlı Demirbaş from Ankara University, cats may scratch more to cope with stress or to mark their territory. The biggest source of this stress is the presence of small children in the home.

The study found that young children significantly affect cats’ stress levels. Their sudden movements and loud noises can be a source of stress for cats.

Also, children may not always understand how to approach cats, which can make them feel threatened. The cat’s personality and past experiences also influence how it perceives the stress caused by children.

There are some scientific methods to reduce its’ scratching behavior. First of all, cats should be provided with suitable scratching posts and these posts should be placed in areas where cats frequent. It is also important to provide playtime for cats. However, excessive or the wrong kind of play can negatively affect cats.

For example, games with laser pointers can cause stress because they don’t satisfy cats’ hunting instincts. Instead, organizing short, successful play sessions (e.g. catfishing) can provide both mental and physical satisfaction.

Managing a cat’s scratching behavior requires understanding the cat’s emotional motivations. By reducing your cat’s stress and redirecting scratching behavior to appropriate materials, you can create a more harmonious living environment for both you and your cat.
