At its latest launch event, Huawei unveiled two new products: one very large, the other surprisingly compact. Alongside its new smart TVs, the company unveiled the Huawei MatePad Mini, a high-end model that caters to a rarely seen segment of the tablet market.
The MatePad Mini’s Display is Dazzling
Aiming to fill the long-standing “premium mini tablet” void in the Android tablet ecosystem, the MatePad Mini is a flagship with its features. The device boasts an 8.8-inch OLED panel with a 2.5K (2560 x 1600 pixel) resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Capable of reaching an impressive 1,800 nits of brightness, this display promises a visual feast with HDR Vivid certification and 10-bit color support.
Additionally, Huawei’s special “Soft Light” display, familiar from the MatePad Pro series, is available as an option on this model, minimizing screen reflections and offering a paper-like feel. Both display types support the M-Pencil Pro stylus for a professional drawing and note-taking experience.
At just 5.1mm thin and weighing 255 grams, the MatePad Mini is one of the most portable models in its class. This slim chassis houses a 6,400mAh battery, which Huawei claims provides 15.5 hours of continuous video playback. Thanks to 66W fast charging support, the tablet can fully charge in approximately an hour.
Powered by a new-generation chipset (the name of which Huawei has not yet announced), the tablet comes with HarmonyOS 5.1, 12GB of RAM, and 256/512GB storage options.
One of the MatePad Mini’s most striking features is its connectivity. In addition to Wi-Fi 7 support, it also features two-way satellite messaging via the BeiDou system, enabling communication even in areas without cellular network connectivity.
The device features a 32MP selfie camera on the front, and a dual rear camera setup consisting of a 50MP main camera and an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera. The rear camera can record 4K video.
The Huawei MatePad Mini is available in China with the following prices:
- 12GB RAM / 256GB Storage: CNY 4,000 (approximately $560)
- 12GB RAM / 512GB Storage: CNY 4,500 (approximately $625)
- 512GB Model with Soft Light Display: CNY 5,000 (approximately $695)
