Hyundai, one of the world’s largest car manufacturers, continues to work on the future. This time a “Moon” vehicle is on the agenda. According to the statement made, Hyundai started to develop an autonomous lunar vehicle, that is, a lunar vehicle capable of moving on its own, to be sent in 2027.
Hyundai plans to build a lunar vehicle ready to be launched into space in 2027
This vehicle, whose concept image you can see just above, will be based on the autonomous driving systems used in Hyundai and Kia vehicles. In this context, the vehicle will carry many cameras and LiDARs. It is aimed to prepare the lunar vehicle on an electric basis. So the vehicle is equipped with solar panels for long-term use. The vehicle, which is resistant to lunar conditions, will start to be actively tested on Earth in 2024 if everything goes well. It is also reported that it will be able to perform digging and sensitive scanning on the lunar surface through a robotic arm.
For the vehicle, many institutions such as the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Construction Technology (KICT), Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH) are currently carrying out collaborative studies. The company, which conducts major future studies, does not limit itself to a single field and also develops robots through Boston Dynamics, which it has acquired.
Hyundai is also working for flying cars
Hyundai also carries out other future studies. For example, the company made a serious noise with the Urban Air Mobility Division that was founded in recent years. With this department, the company stated that they will focus directly on future vehicles such as flying cars. The company put former NASA engineer Dr. Jaiwon Shin in charge of this department. Hyundai also unveiled the first Personal Air Vehicle (PAV) model as a concept at CES 2020.
The company announced that it will continue its work in this field with the Supernal company. Michael Cole stated that the date when flying vehicles/taxis will become a reality is 2030. The statement made on Supernal revealed an earlier date for flying taxis. The company stated that they aim to launch the first flying taxi in 2028. The company stated that they will start actual concrete steps in this regard after 2024.
