Elon Musk’s rocket company SpaceX and Indonesia made headlines recently with a project aimed at connecting remote areas to the internet. As part of the multi-million dollar project, they launched the largest telecommunications satellite in the country from the United States. Consequently, Indonesia has now transitioned to satellite internet. Here are the details!
Indonesia will provide access to 50,000 public service points
Approximately two-thirds of Indonesia’s population of 280 million people use the internet. However, internet connectivity in the underdeveloped eastern islands of the Southeast Asian country is quite limited. The Indonesian Minister made a statement prior to the event.
In his statement, the minister mentioned the benefits that satellite technology will provide. He stated, “Satellite technology will accelerate internet access to villages in areas where fiber optics cannot reach within the next decade.”
The 5.5-ton satellite (SATRIA-1) of Indonesia was built by Thales Alenia Space and deployed into orbit from Florida by SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. It then made a precise landing in a designated offshore zone.Furthermore, the satellite will be positioned over Indonesia’s eastern Papua region.
The Indonesian government stated that it has a capacity of 150 gigabytes per second and will provide access to 50,000 public service points. This project represents a public-private partnership between the government and Indonesian satellite service provider PT Satelit Nusantara Tiga.
