After nearly 15 years, Instagram has reached a new milestone: Mark Zuckerberg announced in a Threads post that the social media app had reached 3 billion monthly users. In 2022, the platform had 2 billion monthly users.
Meta, the owner of Instagram, isn’t known for regularly sharing monthly or daily user numbers for its family of apps. Based on our information, we knew that Facebook reached 2 billion daily users in 2023, and WhatsApp reached 2 billion monthly users in 2020. Last quarter, the company reported 3.48 billion daily active users across Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger.
Reels Coming to Instagram’s Homepage
Meta shared the updated figures as it reportedly plans some significant changes to Instagram. According to Bloomberg, Meta will soon make Reels a more prominent part of the app. Instagram executive Adam Mosseri told the publication that users will see a redesigned navigation bar that will “highlight private messaging and Reels.”
The company will also be testing Reels as the app’s default feed in South Korea and India. According to the company, Instagram’s newly announced iPad app makes Reels the default feed to “reflect how people use larger screens today.”
It seems an interesting coincidence that these changes coincide with the US government nearing a deal that would largely take the US version of TikTok into the hands of US-based investors. Despite over a year of uncertainty surrounding the app’s future in the US, TikTok remains a strong competitor to Meta and Instagram.
